New Safety Center Can Help Prevent Children's Injuries

Children's Hospital's new safety center offers educational information and a broad inventory of low-cost products to help prevent injuries to children, including children with disabilities or special healthcare needs. The center is on the first floor and is open Monday - Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Car seats, bike helmets, smoke detectors, cabinet locks, outlet covers and carbon monoxide detectors are among the products that are available for families statewide. Another component of the Safety Center is Safe Escape, which is offered to families with disabilities and special needs so they can prepare for a safe escape during emergencies. A trained hospital staff member can assess their home life, emergency evacuation concerns and their children's health condition. The center also hosts helmet and car seat sales at local schools.

The Safety Center was funded through a grant from the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Helppie Institute for Child Health Advocacy.

American Girl Fashion Show

Hosted by the Festival of Trees, one of the largest annual special event fundraisers benefiting the Children's Hospital of Michigan, this event should be on your favorite girl's calendar. Patients Can Be Entertained during their MRI Scans

Children's Hospital patients can now watch their favorite movies or listen to music during their MRI scans. The hospital installed a cutting edge CinemaVision Audio-Visual System to help entertain children during the often-tedious test.

Kids strap on a high-tech headset with earphones that deliver symphonic digital sound and "goggles" that produce a high-resolution digital image similar to watching a 62-inch screen from less than six feet away.

MRIs are extremely sensitive to motion and require patients to remain still throughout the procedure which is especially challenging for children. CinemaVision can help reduce stress and anxiety for kids. But most importantly, it helps eliminate risks that accompany sedation. "It really is cool," said J. Michael Zerin, M.D., chief of pediatric imaging. "This was something we've wanted for a long time. It's been at the top of our list. We can get kids through faster and make them more comfortable."

The Sinai Guild, a philanthropic organization that supports health and medical needs in the Detroit area, provided funding for CinemaVision.

This year's fun-filled event will be held Wednesday, August 13 at Comerica Park, when the Tigers face the Toronto Blue Jays. Game time is 7:05 p.m. Tickets are $22 each with proceeds benefiting the Children's Hospital of Michigan Social Work Department. Children (14 & under) will receive a free ride on the Fly Ball Ferris Wheel or the Comerica Carousel (with voucher) at the ballpark.
